Outdoor Structures That Complete Your Ottawa Backyard
At Ottawa Home & Garden, outdoor structures are not a separate trade we subcontract out. They are part of the same project. When we design your backyard, we think about the pool, the interlock patio, the landscaping, and the structures that tie the space together (the deck, the pergola, the shed, the sauna) as a unified whole. Everything is designed to work together, built by one team, and completed under one contract.
We design, supply, and install wood and composite decks, pergolas, sheds, saunas, and outbuildings across Ottawa and the surrounding region. Our structures are built for Ottawa's climate: designed to handle freeze-thaw cycles, heavy snow loads, and the full range of conditions an Ottawa winter produces. Every build is overseen directly by Andrew and Jaime Peterson. No subcontractors handle any phase of the work.
What we do not do: we are not licensed for electrical or HVAC work. If your structure requires electrical connections or mechanical systems, those elements are arranged separately by the homeowner through a licensed trade. We will design the structure to accommodate those systems and coordinate the build sequence, but the licensed work itself falls outside our scope.
Built by the Same Team That Builds Your Pool and Patio
26+ Years of Ottawa Outdoor Builds
Ottawa Home & Garden has been designing and building outdoor spaces in Ottawa since 1998. Every structure we build reflects 26+ years of Ottawa climate experience: we know what materials hold up through Ottawa winters, how to detail a deck ledger to prevent moisture infiltration, how to set posts for Ottawa’s frost depth, and how to design drainage around a structure so the surrounding interlock and landscaping performs for the long term. This knowledge is not transferable from a warmer climate. It comes from building here, year after year.
A+ Better Business Bureau Rating: Zero Complaints on File
Our A+ BBB rating is independently verified. For a project that involves permanent construction on your property, working with a contractor whose track record is publicly verifiable matters.
ICPI Certified & Techo-PRO Certified
Our ICPI and Techo-PRO certifications govern the hardscaping work that typically surrounds outdoor structures: the interlock patios, steps, and walkways that connect your deck and outdoor rooms to the rest of the backyard. Structures and hardscaping are designed and built together so every element fits properly and drains correctly.
No Subcontractors: One Team for the Entire Build
The carpenter who frames your deck is the same person accountable to Andrew and Jaime. We do not hire outside crews for framing, decking, roofing, or finishing. Every person on your property is part of our team. This is how we have operated since 1998. See our about us page for the full story.

Our Outdoor Structure Services in Ottawa

Wood and Composite Decks
A deck is often the primary transition point between the home and the backyard. We design and build custom wood and composite decks across Ottawa, from straightforward pressure-treated platforms to multi-level composite builds with built-in benches, planters, and railing systems. Every deck we build is designed with Ottawa’s climate in mind: proper post depth for Ottawa’s frost line, drainage-conscious framing details to prevent moisture retention, and material choices that perform through freeze-thaw cycles without warping or heaving.
We build with pressure-treated wood, cedar, and composite decking materials. Every project is designed to your property, your home’s architecture, and your intended use. If the deck connects to a pool surround or poolscaping area, we design both together so the transition is seamless and the drainage works correctly across the full outdoor space.

Pergolas
A pergola defines an outdoor room without enclosing it. Whether it covers a dining area, a lounge space beside the pool, or a transition between the deck and the garden, a well-designed pergola gives the backyard a sense of structure and purpose that open space alone cannot provide. We design and build custom wood pergolas sized and positioned to fit your property and your outdoor living pattern.
Our pergola builds can be freestanding or attached to the house, designed as open-beam structures or with a solid or louvred roof section for weather protection. They are built to Ottawa’s snow load requirements: the Ottawa region regularly receives heavy snow accumulation, and a pergola built to southern Ontario or American standards will not carry an Ottawa winter load without risk. Every pergola we build is engineered for local conditions.

Sheds
A well-built shed does more than store tools. It removes clutter from the garage, provides dedicated storage for seasonal equipment, and keeps the backyard organized. We design and build custom sheds across Ottawa, sized to your lot and your storage requirements. Sheds are built on a proper foundation with appropriate drainage so they do not shift or settle over Ottawa’s freeze-thaw cycles. Finished interior or shell-only options are available depending on intended use.
We do not supply or install electrical connections to shed structures. Those are arranged separately through a licensed electrician. We design the structure to accommodate electrical rough-in if planned, and we coordinate the build sequence to allow for trades access at the appropriate phase.

Saunas
Outdoor saunas are one of the most practical additions to an Ottawa property given the climate. A well-built backyard sauna extends the usable outdoor season and adds a year-round feature to a space that might otherwise sit dormant from October through April. We design and build custom outdoor sauna structures: the building itself, the interior bench configuration, the wall and ceiling construction, and the drainage for the surrounding area.
Sauna heater installation, electrical supply, and ventilation systems are outside our licensed scope and are arranged separately by the homeowner through the appropriate licensed trades. We design the structure to accommodate these systems and build to the dimensions and specifications required by the equipment supplier, but the mechanical and electrical work itself is not ours to complete.

Outbuildings
Beyond sheds, we build custom outbuildings for a range of uses: garden rooms, hobby workshops, pool equipment enclosures, storage buildings, and multi-purpose structures that serve as extensions of the home’s function. Outbuildings are designed with the same attention to foundation, drainage, and structural performance as any permanent build on your property. We work with you on size, layout, and materials selection, and the build is planned in context with the surrounding backyard design so the outbuilding fits the property as a whole rather than sitting in isolation.
As with sheds, electrical and HVAC connections are outside our licensed scope and are arranged separately. We design outbuildings to accommodate those systems if planned and coordinate the build sequence accordingly.

Pool Equipment Enclosures and Mechanical Covers
Pool equipment (pumps, filters, heaters, automation panels) is expensive to replace and performs better when protected from Ottawa’s weather. We design and build custom equipment enclosures as part of pool installation projects and as standalone additions to existing pools. An enclosure extends equipment life, reduces noise, and keeps the pool area visually clean. Every enclosure is designed to allow proper ventilation and service access while protecting the equipment from snow, ice, and direct sun exposure.

Structures as Part of a Complete Backyard Build
The strongest outdoor living spaces are designed from the start as complete systems. A deck that leads to an interlock patio, connected to a pool surround, anchored by a pergola dining area, with a shed tucked behind the garden. This space works because every element was planned to work together. When you hire separate contractors for each element, the integration is never quite right: levels don’t match, drainage is an afterthought, and the visual logic of the space is compromised by the boundaries between trades.
Ottawa Home & Garden handles the complete build under one contract. Pool installation, poolscaping, interlock hardscaping, landscaping, and outdoor structures are all planned and executed by the same team. The deck is designed with the pool surround grade. The pergola is positioned relative to the sun angle and the view from inside the house. The shed is sited so it does not compromise the garden or the pool sightlines. These decisions are only possible when one team sees the whole picture from the first drawing.

Frequently Asked QuestionsAbout Outdoor Structures in Ottawa
Contact usWhat is the process for getting a quote on an outdoor structure?
The process starts with a free on-site consultation. We visit your Ottawa property, assess the site, discuss what you want from the structure, and give you an accurate estimate based on your specific lot and scope. We do not quote over the phone without seeing the site. You can book a consultation by calling 613-833-2645 or through our online contact form. See our full project process to understand how the build unfolds from that first visit.
Can you integrate a shed or outbuilding into an existing backyard?
Yes. We assess the existing site conditions, drainage, and surrounding construction before positioning any new structure. If the existing backyard design includes interlock, garden beds, or a pool area, we site the new structure to work with those existing elements rather than in conflict with them. We also plan the foundation and drainage to avoid directing runoff toward the existing construction.
Do you build saunas for year-round outdoor use in Ottawa?
Yes. Outdoor saunas built for year-round Ottawa use require specific insulation values, vapour barrier details, and drainage design around the base that a summer-only structure does not need. We build the sauna structure to perform through Ottawa winters. The heater, electrical supply, and any ventilation system are outside our scope and are sourced and installed separately by the homeowner through licensed trades.
How do you build decks and pergolas for Ottawa’s climate?
Ottawa’s climate demands specific construction practices. Deck posts are set at or below Ottawa’s frost depth to prevent heaving. Framing details are designed to avoid moisture traps that cause rot in Ottawa’s wet springs. Material selections account for freeze-thaw expansion: pressure-treated lumber, cedar, and quality composite products all behave predictably in Ottawa temperatures in ways that cheaper imports do not. Pergolas are engineered for Ottawa’s snow loads, which are significantly higher than southern Ontario or American building standards account for. Every structure we build is designed for where it is going, not where it was designed.
Can you build a deck and a pool in the same project?
Yes, and this is one of the main advantages of working with Ottawa Home & Garden. We handle pool installation, poolscaping, interlock, landscaping, and outdoor structures under one contract. When the deck, the pool surround, and the patio are designed and built by the same team, the grades match, the drainage works across the full space, and the visual logic of the backyard is consistent. Coordinating these elements between separate contractors introduces design gaps that are difficult and expensive to fix after the fact.
Do you handle electrical or HVAC connections for saunas and sheds?
No. We are not licensed for electrical or HVAC work. We design structures to accommodate those systems, build to the specifications required by the equipment, and coordinate the build sequence to allow licensed trades access at the right phase. The electrical and mechanical connections themselves are arranged by the homeowner through a licensed electrician or HVAC contractor.
What outdoor structures does Ottawa Home & Garden build?
We design, supply, and install wood and composite decks, pergolas, sheds, saunas, and custom outbuildings. We build these as standalone projects and as part of complete backyard builds that include pools, interlock patios, and landscaping. We do not install fencing, ponds, hot tubs, or electrical and HVAC systems. Those fall outside our licensed scope.
