Seasonal Pool Care from the Team That Built Your Pool
Pool opening and pool closing services are likely more important than most pool owners realize. Proper seasonal care is the single most preventable source of pool damage in Ottawa. An improperly opened pool can develop algae within days of startup. An improperly closed pool can crack its liner, freeze its equipment, or collapse its plumbing lines in a single Ottawa winter. At Ottawa Home & Garden, we provide pool opening and closing services across Ottawa for every pool owner in the region, whether we installed your pool or not. The same team, the same standard, every season.
Ottawa’s climate makes seasonal care non-negotiable in a way that does not apply in milder parts of Canada. Ground temperatures reach -25°C. Water in unprotected lines will freeze, expand, and crack. A liner that is left with incorrect water chemistry through the winter will degrade faster than one that is properly closed. These are not minor risks. They are the difference between a pool that lasts 20 years and one that needs liner replacement or equipment repair after its third season.
Our Pool Opening Service in Ottawa
Our spring pool opening service covers every step required to bring your Ottawa pool from winter storage to swim-ready, correctly. We target late April to mid-May for most Ottawa properties, once daytime temperatures consistently hold above 10 to 15°C. Many Ottawa owners aim for the May long weekend.
Cover Removal and Inspection
- Pump all standing water off the cover before removal
- Clear debris with a skimmer net
- Remove cover carefully to prevent debris falling into the pool
- Clean the cover with mild soap and dry fully before storage
- Lubricate all cover anchors for easier fall installation
- Inspect cover for damage and flag any issues for repair before next season
Equipment Startup
- Remove all winter plugs and reinstall drain plugs on filter and pump
- Prime the pump by filling with water to prevent airlock on startup
- Start system, backwash filter for 2 to 3 minutes, rinse 30 seconds, switch to filter mode
- Check all connections and fittings for leaks while system runs
- Inspect equipment for any damage sustained over winter
- Gas heaters require a licensed gas fitter inspection before startup. We coordinate this through our trusted licensed trades
Shock and Initial Treatment
- Shock at dusk or evening, as UV degrades chlorine before it can work
- Use dichlor or liquid chlorine, which is safest for vinyl liners
- If using cal-hypo, pre-dissolve in a bucket of water first. Never add granules directly to a vinyl liner pool
- Circulate for at least 24 hours before testing chemistry
Water Chemistry Balancing
- Test and adjust total alkalinity first (target 80 to 120 ppm). Alkalinity is the foundation, correct this before chasing pH
- Test and adjust pH (target 7.2 to 7.8)
- Test chlorine (target 1 to 1.5 ppm for vinyl liner longevity)
- Check calcium hardness (150 to 250 ppm) and stabilizer/CYA (30 to 50 ppm)
- Re-test after 24 hours and make final adjustments
- Confirm water is visually clear and all equipment running without leaks or unusual noise before declaring swim-ready
Our complete pool maintenance guide covers what swim-ready means in full chemical and equipment terms for Ottawa vinyl liner pools. Our pool opening and closing timing guide covers when to open based on Ottawa’s specific seasonal patterns.
Final Preparation
- Clean pool thoroughly: skim, vacuum, and brush walls, steps, and floor
- Balance water chemistry one final time before shutdown
- Shock the pool just before closing
Draining and Winterizing
- Lower water level below the skimmer returns
- Blow out all plumbing lines, essential to prevent freezing in Ottawa winters
- Add antifreeze to lines where appropriate
- Install winter plugs in returns and skimmer (Gizzmo)
- Drain pump, filter, heater, and all equipment lines completely
- Blow out and drain any water feature supply lines. Ottawa freeze-thaw will crack an unprotected water feature supply line in a single winter
Cover Installation
- Install winter cover securely. Ottawa covers must handle significant snow loads, not just leaves
- Verify cover is tight and secured at all anchor points
- Check cover tension after first significant wind event
Critical: Never Fully Drain a Vinyl Liner Pool
Draining completely can cause the liner to shrink, crack, or shift out of its track. Ottawa’s high spring water table can also push an improperly drained pool out of the ground. Always maintain water in the pool through winter. Lower it below the skimmer, not to empty. If drainage is required for repairs, contact us first.
Our Pool Closing Service in Ottawa
We target mid-September to mid-October for pool closing across Ottawa, before the first hard frost, and ideally when water temperature drops below 15°C. Closing too late risks freezing equipment. Closing too early wastes the tail end of Ottawa’s swim season.
Why Seasonal Care from the Installing Team Makes a Difference
We Serve Every Ottawa Pool, Not Just the Ones We Built
We open and close pools across Ottawa regardless of who installed them. If we built your pool, we bring the full build history with us: the equipment package, the liner type, the water feature supply line configuration, and any site-specific drainage considerations that affect the seasonal process. If we did not build your pool, we conduct a thorough equipment inspection on the first visit, document your specific setup, and bring that same level of knowledge to every seasonal service we perform. Either way, you get a team that knows your pool, not a crew that works from what they find on the day.
Equipment Coordination Is Handled
Gas heater startup requires a licensed gas fitter inspection. Water feature electrical systems require a licensed electrician if they need service. We coordinate those connections through our own trusted licensed trades. You do not manage that yourself.
No Subcontractors on Your Property
Every person who performs your seasonal service is part of our team. There are no third-party crews, no accountability gaps, and no situations where the service technician does not know the equipment. See our completed pool projects and our client testimonials to understand how we operate.
Ottawa-Specific Standards Throughout
Our seasonal care protocols are built for Ottawa’s climate specifically. Vinyl liner care in cold conditions differs from what works in milder climates. Ottawa’s spring runoff and groundwater pressure create specific risks at opening. Our experience means we have seen every seasonal failure mode this climate produces and we know how to prevent them.

Serving Ottawa and Surrounding Communities
We provide pool opening and closing services across Ottawa and the surrounding region, including Hunt Club, Manotick, Metcalfe, Greely, Ottawa, Orléans, Nepean, Barrhaven, Stittsville, and Kanata. Our full service area covers the broader Ottawa region. Wherever you are, we are ready to open or close your pool properly, on time, and to the standard that protects your equipment and liner season after season.
FAQs: Pool Opening and Closing in Ottawa
Contact usWhen should I open my pool in Ottawa?
Late April to mid-May, once daytime temperatures consistently hold above 10 to 15°C. Many Ottawa owners target the May long weekend as a practical goal. Opening too early in Ottawa risks algae growth in cold water that is not yet warm enough to hold chlorine effectively. Opening too late just shortens your season unnecessarily. Read more on our pool opening timing guide.
When should I close my pool in Ottawa?
Mid-September to mid-October, before the first hard frost and ideally when water temperature drops below 15°C. Closing too late risks freezing equipment and supply lines. Closing too early is just wasted swim season. Ottawa’s first hard frost can arrive with little warning in October. Do not wait for frost before booking a closing.
Why can’t I just follow a generic pool closing checklist?
Generic pool closing guides are written for typical North American climates. Ottawa’s winters are significantly more severe than most of Canada’s major centres. Ground temperatures, the depth of the freeze line, the spring groundwater pressure from snowmelt, and the specific risks to vinyl liner pools in freeze-thaw conditions all require Ottawa-specific protocols. A closing procedure that is adequate in Toronto’s slightly milder winters may leave an Ottawa pool with cracked supply lines by March.
What happens if a pool is not properly winterized in Ottawa?
Water left in supply lines will freeze, expand, and crack the line or the fitting. Equipment that is not fully drained can crack its housing. A liner with incorrect water chemistry going into winter will experience accelerated bleaching and may develop stress fractures. Pool covers that are not sized and tensioned for Ottawa snow loads can fail under accumulation and allow debris into the pool. These are not unlikely scenarios in Ottawa. They are what happens to pools that are not closed correctly.
Do you open and close pools you did not install?
Yes. We provide seasonal opening and closing services for Ottawa pools regardless of who installed them. For pools we did not install, we conduct a full equipment inspection on the first visit to understand the specific configuration before proceeding. Contact us at 613-833-2645 or through our contact form to book.
Do you handle water feature opening and closing?
Yes. Pool water features require their own supply line blowout and winterization at closing. Waterfalls, sheer descents, deck jets, and bubblers all have supply lines that will freeze if not properly drained. We include water feature winterization in every pool closing service we complete.
How do I book a pool opening or closing in Ottawa?
